Help, my shisha is scratching or pressing: causes & solutions
It's the nightmare of every session: you're looking forward to the end of the day, have everything prepared, get dressed - and immediately have to cough. Instead of thick, delicious smoke, there is only a burning sensation in the throat or a heavy feeling in the lungs.
Before we find the solution, we have to examine the “patient”. Because Scratch is not the same Press. The distinction is extremely important:
- The shisha scratches (burning in the throat): This is a heat problem. Your tobacco is currently burning. He gets too much temperature from the coal, the molasses doesn't evaporate but instead chars.
- The shisha presses (heaviness on the lungs): This is usually a nicotine or moisture problem. The tobacco has too little heat (the molasses doesn't cook properly) or it is too strong for you (nicotine flash).
Cause #1: Heat Management (HMD)
90% of the time the scratching is because you can't control the heat. Anyone who smokes pure aluminum foil or uses the wrong equipment burns the tobacco. The standard for relaxed smoking today is a HMD (Heat Management Device), or one Smokebox.
But be careful: not all HMDs are the same. The material decides how your session goes.
Aluminum HMDs (The all-rounder)
Aluminum smoke boxes (again ONMO or Kaloud) are perfect for every smoker. Aluminum conducts heat extremely quickly. This means: If the shisha scratches and you take down a coal, your head will cool down immediately. You are in full control. They are forgiving of mistakes and work perfectly with almost any tobacco.
Stainless steel HMDs (The heat storage devices)
Stainless steel HMDs (like Na Grani) are heavy equipment for professionals. Stainless steel is sluggish. It takes a long time to get hot - but when it is hot, it stores energy massively. This is brilliant for heat resistant tobacco (like Darkblend) that wants to be “whipped”. But be careful: If it scratches here, it will take a long time for the block to cool down again. Often difficult to control for beginners.
Cause #2: Incorrect setup (chimney vs. foil)
Many smokers start with a classic one Chimney top. The problem: The fireplace often delivers very aggressive, uneven heat. The coals are far out, but the tube creates a chimney effect that can quickly burn the surface of the tobacco while the tobacco is still raw at the bottom.
The insider tip: The “Provost” setup
If you want maximum control but don't want to smoke purely on aluminum foil, the "Apple On Top Provost" system (or similar attachments) is a game changer. You stretch aluminum foil over your head and place the small stainless steel attachment with only 2 coals on it.
The advantage: You use less coal, protect the tobacco from direct contact with the foil and have perfect heat management thanks to the lid. Scratching is almost impossible when you “play” with the lid (lid on = less heat, lid closed = more heat).
The future: no more burned tobacco?
What if you could adjust the temperature to the exact degree? No carbon, no carbon monoxide, no scratching from overheating. Electric shisha heads (like the Xkah) are an investment, but they solve the heat problem physically.
You set the head to, for example, 230 degrees. The head keeps this temperature constant. “Burning” is technically impossible because the electronics shut off before the tobacco chars. Perfect for gaming sessions where you don't want to worry about spending money.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about scratchy shisha
Why does the shisha scratch immediately after smoking?
Most of the time you have built your head too high (“overpacking”). The tobacco touches the HMD or foil too strongly and burns immediately. Next time, pay attention to a small distance (nub contact) or only use 2 coals instead of 3 to start smoking.

Why does the shisha press even though there is enough smoke?
This is often due to nicotine or a lack of heat in the core. When you smoke darkblend, pressing can be a sign of high nicotine content (“buzz”). With Virginia tobacco, pressing often means: The tobacco needs more Heat to properly release the flavors.
What to do if the tobacco tastes burnt?
Once the taste is “burnt”, the head is usually gone. As an emergency solution: Take the HMD down, carefully remove the top, black layer of tobacco with pliers and put the HMD back on. You can often save the session this way.
