Types of charcoal lighters

Heating plate or whirlpool?

One heating plate is simple and tried and tested - put the money on it, wait, and you're done. A Hot tub lighter The coal glows through hot air from all sides at the same time, which leads to more even glow and shortens the waiting time. A heating plate is enough to get you started; those who sit a lot benefit from the whirlpool.

Tip: Order now Storage grid to go with it – it protects the hot plate from direct contact with the charcoal and significantly extends the lifespan of your burner.

Buying guide: lighting charcoal properly

  • Time: With an electric burner it takes about 7–10 minutes; turn the charcoal once after 4–5 minutes.
  • Ready: The charcoal glows red all over and has a grey layer of ash, with no black spots.
  • Safety: Only light charcoal outdoors – an open window is not enough. Never light it on a ceramic hob.

You also need Natural charcoal, a Coal tongs, a Coal basket and, when it’s windy, a Wind cover.

Frequently asked questions about charcoal lighters

How long does it take for the coal to burn through?

For 1000 W heating plates approx. 8-10 minutes, for whirlpool models approx. 5-8 minutes. The coal must be completely gray/white before it goes on the shisha.

Can I use a regular kitchen stove?

No – never light shisha charcoal on a ceramic hob (burn marks, the charcoal can jump), and induction hobs don’t work with it. Use an electric charcoal burner or a gas charcoal burner and light it outdoors.

Gas or electric – which is better for on the go?

The gas charcoal lighter is ideal for on the go as it does not require a socket. For home use, electric models are more convenient and cheaper to operate.
