A Heat Management Device (HMD) replaces the classic aluminum foil and is placed directly on the shisha head. The glowing coals go into the smokebox, which stores the heat and distributes it evenly to the tobacco. Step 1 – Head Construction: Build your bowl (preferably a phunnel) so that the tobacco lightly touches the bottom of the smokebox or stays just below it.
Step 2 – Charcoal: Start with 2 to 2.5 natural coals (26mm or 27mm) and place them in the smokebox.
Step 3 – Start smoking: Wait 3-5 minutes for the material to heat up. Don't steep straight away - that's the key to good taste.
Step 4 – Regulation: Is it getting too hot? Take out a coal or open the lid. Too little smoke? Put the lid on or close the ventilation.

A smokebox (HMD) is superior to the fireplace attachment in almost all respects. It offers more intense flavor and denser smoke because the heat is retained better. The chimney attachment is easier for absolute beginners, but if you want the full aroma of your tobacco, use the smokebox.
Smokeboxes are standardized and fit almost all modern shisha heads. They harmonize particularly well with phunnel heads, as no molasses runs into the shisha and the contact surface for the attachment is ideal. Popular combinations: Oblako Phunnel M + ONMO or Vandenberg V1 + HX Type 1.
It's best to soak the cooled smokebox in warm water. You can remove stubborn tobacco residue on the underside with a wire brush (for stainless steel) or a soft sponge (for coated aluminum). Do not use aggressive cleaning agents.
As a rule, 2 natural coals (26mm or 27mm) are enough for a smokebox. With stainless steel HMDs, even 2 coals are often enough for an intensive session. You don't need any money for the XKAH Pro - it works completely electrically.
