Natural coal (coconut coal) – the gold standard: Made from pressed coconut shells. Natural charcoal burns hotter, longer (up to 90 minutes) and produces less ash than other coals. Most importantly: It is completely tasteless and does not distort your shisha experience. You will need an electric charcoal lighter or gas stove, as natural charcoal cannot be lit with a lighter. Natural charcoal is the clear recommendation for every setup at home.
Self-igniting coal – for on the go: Added with ignition aid and can be ignited with a lighter. Significantly shorter burning time and a slight taste. Perfect for festivals, the beach or camping - but not recommended for everyday use.
The size of the charcoal cubes determines the heat output and how they fit in your smokebox:
25mm & 26mm (default): The perfect choice for most setups. Fits two or three people in any smokebox (ONMO, Kaloud, HX Type 1). Ideal for Virginia tobacco and more delicate varieties that require less heat. The Rubik's cube 26mm are our all-round bestseller.
27mm & 28mm (Boost): Burn longer and hotter. Ideal for heat-resistant darkblend tobaccos and large stainless steel HMDs like Na Grani. But be careful: some compact smokeboxes only fit 2 pieces. If you smoke Darkside, Blackburn or Must H, go for the larger coals for maximum heat throughout the entire session.

Place the charcoal cubes on an electric charcoal lighter and wait until they glow evenly on all sides and have a white ash layer - this takes about 8-12 minutes. Turn the coals over once in a while. They are only ready when there is no longer any black core visible. Coal that has not been burned through is the most common cause of bad taste and carbon monoxide pollution.
Natural charcoal does not contain any ignition aid, so you need an electric charcoal lighter or gas stove. Place the coals on top and wait about 8-12 minutes until they glow evenly red on all sides and have a layer of white ash. Turn them over every now and then. A lighter is not enough.
26mm is the all-rounder and fits in every smokebox. Ideal for Virginia tobacco and most setups. 27mm burns hotter and longer - perfect for darkblend tobacco and stainless steel HMDs. If you are unsure, start with 26mm.
For a smokebox you usually need 2 to 3 coals. For stainless steel HMDs, 2 carbons are often enough. With aluminum foil or a chimney attachment you will need 3 coals. A natural charcoal burns for around 60-90 minutes, so you usually don't need a refill per session.
This is almost always because the coal was not completely burned through. Leave it on the lighter until it has a layer of white ash on all sides and is completely glowing red - including the core. Another reason: too little air supply in the smokebox. Open the vents slightly.
Darkblend tobacco (e.g. Darkside, Blackburn, Must H) tolerates and requires more heat. Choose 27mm or 28mm carbons for consistently high temperatures throughout the session. In combination with a stainless steel HMD you get maximum performance.
