Choosing the right bowl depends on how you smoke and what tobacco you use. There are three main types that differ fundamentally in design and function:
Phunnel head: The most popular head type among shisha smokers. The Phunnel has a single, raised hole in the middle of the depot. This means that the molasses does not run off into the smoke column, but remains in the depot - this ensures a more intense taste and longer sessions. Phunnel bowls are ideal for moist tobacco and use with a smokebox or HMD. Popular models with us: Oblako Phunnel M, Vandenberg V1 Phunnel and Tangier's Pico.
Multi-hole head: The classic shisha head with several small holes at the bottom. Multi-hole heads offer a more open draft and are particularly suitable for drier tobacco types and traditional smoking with aluminum foil. Glazed clay: The most popular material. The glaze prevents the bowl from absorbing flavor (no “ghosting”). Even heat distribution and easy cleaning. Oblako, Vandenberg and Cosmo Bowl all rely on glazed clay.
Unglazed clay: Traditional material that retains a little more heat. Cheaper option, but can take on flavor over time. Ideal for beginners as their first head.
Stone/Ceramic: High quality material with excellent heat retention. Tangiers Bowl relies on this material for particularly consistent sessions.
Recommendation for beginners: Start with a glazed Phunnel bowl (e.g. Oblako M or Vandenberg V1) in combination with a smokebox. This is the easiest and best tasting combination for beginners. You save yourself the hassle of building foil and get even heat right from the start.

A phunnel bowl is better suited for moist tobacco and use with a smokebox as the molasses does not run off. A multi-hole bowl offers a more open draft and is ideal for drier tobaccos and traditional aluminum foil smoking. For most modern tobaccos and setups we recommend a phunnel.
For beginners, we recommend a glazed phunnel head like the Oblako Phunnel M or the Vandenberg V1. In combination with a smokebox, the setup is easy to use, forgiving of mistakes when building the head and delivers good taste right from the start.
That depends on the head size. A standard phunnel like the Oblako M holds approximately 15-18 grams of tobacco. Smaller heads like the Oblako S or Tangiers Pico hold 8-12 grams. Multi-hole heads usually hold 10-15 grams. For solo sessions a small head is sufficient, for longer rounds we recommend an M or L phunnel.
Glazed bowls do not absorb flavor, are easier to clean and distribute heat more evenly. Unglazed bowls can absorb flavor over time (ghosting), but offer slightly more intense heat development. For most smokers, glazed bowls are a better choice.
Most hookah heads have a standard inner diameter and fit almost all standard hookahs. If a head doesn't fit perfectly, a silicone seal can help. Plug-in bowls (killer bowls) are inserted directly into the smoke column and require a suitable holder - pay attention to compatibility with your shisha.
After each session, rinse your head under warm water and remove any tobacco residue. This is usually enough for glazed heads. If there are stubborn residues, you can soak the head in hot water with a little citric acid. Do not use harsh cleaning products and always allow the head to dry completely before using it again.
