Aluminum vs. stainless steel – which is right for you?

Aluminum heats up faster and is lighter, but also cools down faster. Ideal for shorter sessions or if you don't have much patience for preheating. Stainless steel retains heat longer and is more robust – better for long sessions. Both materials deliver good results in heat management.

Tip: With aluminum smokeboxes, use 2 coals instead of 3, as aluminum conducts heat faster. This will prevent the tobacco from burning.

No, that's the big advantage of an HMD - you put the coal directly on the smokebox, without any foil.

Does aluminum discolor over time?
