Anise Shisha Tobacco

Licorice-like, warm and unmistakable: anise is the secret star behind the world's most famous shisha flavor – its spicy depth is what turns two apples into a true double apple. That's why the spice almost always appears paired with apple in our range, from the traditional Al Fakher style to the dark Darkblend interpretation – plus a few unconventional takes that show what anise can do beyond the classic.

What does anise shisha tobacco taste like?

Anise tastes like licorice and fennel: sweet-spicy, with a slightly cooling aftertaste – and is thus perhaps the most-smoked flavor that almost nobody calls by name. That's because with us, anise almost never runs solo, but as the spice signature of double apple: from the traditional AL FAKHER The Double Crunch via the modern interpretation Aino Don app through to the dark interpretation Darkside Doppelganger practically every anise variety also has apple in it. The exceptions are the most exciting: Jent Industry Legend adds ripe peach to the duo, Kismet Black Apple 19 backs it with honey – and with Black Bisquit 17, Kismet even had an anise pastry in cookie style in its range, which is currently sold out.

Our flavor profile for anise in comparison:

  • Sweetness: 3 out of 5 – licorice-like spicy sweetness, not candy
  • Acid: 1 out of 5 – practically none, at most the apple partner brings some
  • Freshness: 2 of 5 – Anise cools noticeably, without any ice additive
  • Strength: 4 out of 5 – the spice comes through, even when dosed sparingly
  • Smoke development: 3 out of 5 – solid clouds, the focus is on the spice

Which brands make anise tobacco?

Anise expertise is split between two camps: Adalya and KISMET each provide several interpretations, plus there are Al Fakher as guardian of the original, Aino and Tumbaki with modern interpretations as well as Darkside for the dark faction and Jent in the premium segment. Notably: Virginia- and Darkblend-base are represented almost equally strongly in anise – the warm spice tone works on a light as well as a dark base, so you choose purely based on the strength you want.

Setup Recommendation for Anise Shisha Tobacco

Like all modern molasses tobaccos, anise belongs loose and fluffy in a Phunnel head – depending on size 15–22 g, with 2–3 mm distance to the foil or smokebox (HMD). The constant, well-adjustable heat of an HMD pays off twice with anise: overheated anise loses its sweet licorice side and becomes harsh on the throat – so it's better to start with one less coal and add more after the first draws. One more word on charcoal: quick-light coals have no place with anise. Their chemical undertone lands exactly on the level where the spice plays – with coconut natural charcoal it stays clean.

For the dark ones like Darkside Doppelganger or the Kismet blends, the dark-blend rule also applies: pack fluffy to semi-firm and start with reduced heat – a slightly denser pack smooths out the nicotine kick.

Mixing anise – the best combinations

  • Anise + Apple (50/50): Double apple to your own recipe: apple and anise are practically inseparable – so you decide yourself how much licorice spice lands in the head.
  • Anise + Cinnamon (50/50): Anise and cinnamon together form the gingerbread direction: doubly warm, doubly spicy – probably the coziest head for cold evenings.
  • Anise + Pastry (30/70): Anise laid over pastry tastes like fresh anise cookies – exactly the direction Kismet Black Bisquit 17 laid out.
  • Anise + peach (30/70): Soft peach catches the licorice spice smoothly – the formula that Jent Industry Legend runs from the factory.

Frequently asked questions about anise shisha tobacco

Which anise shisha tobacco is the best?
Right at the top for us are Aino Don App and AL FAKHER The Double Crunch – one modern and anise-forward, the other the double apple classic par excellence. If you like it darker and stronger, reach for Darkside Doppelganger; for the premium special route with peach there's Jent Industry Legend.
Why does double apple taste like licorice?
The licorice note comes from anise: its sweetish, spicy aroma is strongly reminiscent of licorice and fennel, and in Double Apple it weaves together with red and green apple into that unmistakable traditional flavor. Without anise, Double Apple would just be an ordinary apple tobacco – the spice is what makes the genre.
Is there also pure anise shisha tobacco?
Not currently – for us, anise only ever comes as part of a blend, usually with apple as Double Apple. The closest thing to a pure anise experience was Kismet Black Bisquit 17, which combined the spice with pastry and cinnamon, but it's currently out of stock. If you want maximum anise, go for a boldly spicy take like Aino Don App.
What can I mix anise tobacco with?
The most natural addition is apple – with that you build yourself the double-apple ratio. Also exciting: cinnamon for the gingerbread direction, pastry for anise-cookie heads, and soft peach, which cushions the spice velvety. Important: anise carries far, a moderate share in the mix is almost always enough.
Is anise tobacco more mild or strong?
The aroma itself is assertive, but the base underneath it varies: light Virginia-based versions like the Adalya interpretations smoke mild and session-friendly, while Darkside Doppelganger and the Kismet blends bring noticeably more nicotine foundation. With anise, you have both camps to choose from in similar range.
Does anise get harsh in the head quickly?
Only with too much heat: overheated anise loses its sweet licorice side and turns sharp on the finish. So pack it loosely into the Phunnel, keep some distance from the HMD and start with a reduced amount of charcoal – you can always add more. With natural charcoal instead of self-igniting charcoal, the delicate spice note also stays clean.
