Our top sellers & savings deals

Quality doesn't have to be expensive. Our own brand Rubik's cube offers premium coconut charcoal at a fair price – made from pure coconut shells, with a long burn time and little ash. Available as a 1kg pack to try or as a 20kg bulk package for heavy smokers (volume discount + free shipping!).

Other popular brands: Al Duchan (BLACK 28 and RZA 26), Cocobration (27er Premium) and Black Coco's.

Natural coal vs. self-igniting – what’s the difference?

  • Natural coal (coconut coal) – the gold standard: Made from pressed coconut shells. Natural charcoal burns hotter and longer (up to 90 minutes) and produces less ash than other charcoals. Most importantly: it is largely flavor-neutral and barely affects your shisha experience. You need an electric charcoal burner or a gas stove, as natural charcoal can’t be lit with a lighter. For any setup at home, natural charcoal is the clear recommendation.
  • Self-igniting coal – for on the go: Treated with an ignition aid and can be lit with a lighter. Noticeably shorter burn time and a slight flavor of its own. Handy for festivals, the beach or camping – but not recommended for daily use.

Size advice: 25mm, 26mm, 27mm or 28mm?

The size of the charcoal cubes determines the heat output and how they fit in your smokebox:

  • 25mm & 26mm (default): The right choice for most setups. Two or three fit into any HMD (ONMO, Kaloud, HX Typ 1). Ideal for Virginia tobacco and more delicate flavors that need less heat. The Rubik's cube 26mm are our all-round bestseller.
  • 27mm & 28mm (Boost): Burn longer and hotter. Made for large stainless steel HMDs such as Na Grani and for setups that need more heat. Note: some compact HMDs only fit 2 pieces.
  • Savings tip: Anyone who smokes regularly will save significantly with the 20kg large package. The Rubik's cube 20kg packages last for months and ship for free.

Light shisha charcoal correctly – here’s how it works

Place the charcoal cubes on an electric charcoal burner and wait until they glow evenly on all sides and have a white layer of ash – this takes approx. 8–12 minutes. Turn the charcoal over once in between. They are only ready when no black core is visible anymore. Charcoal that isn’t fully lit is a common cause of bad taste and carbon monoxide exposure.

In the charcoal category, we carry charcoal from several brands. At the center is our own brand Rubik's cube with several charcoal products, including the 1kg pack to try and the 20kg bulk pack. Al Duchan is represented by the BLACK 28 and the RZA 26. Cocobration contributes the 27mm Premium, Black Coco's another coconut charcoal product. This covers all common cube sizes from 26mm to 28mm.

Buying advice

Choose size: If you mainly smoke Virginia tobacco or more delicate blends and use a compact HMD, 26mm is the right choice – two or three fit in any HMD. If you use a large stainless steel HMD, 27mm or 28mm give you more heat for the whole session. Before buying, check how many cubes of your preferred size fit your HMD.

1kg or 20kg: With a 1kg pack, you can test a brand or size without committing. If you smoke regularly, the 20kg bulk pack is cheaper per kilo and saves on shipping. Coconut charcoal keeps for a long time when stored dry.

Don't forget to light it: Natural charcoal needs an electric charcoal burner or a gas stove; a lighter isn't enough. Plan for 8–12 minutes and turn the cubes over once. For on the go without a power source, quick-light charcoal is the more practical but flavor-wise weaker choice.

Frequently Asked Questions – Shisha Charcoal

How do I light natural charcoal correctly?

Natural charcoal does not contain any ignition aid, so you need an electric charcoal lighter or gas stove. Place the coals on top and wait about 8-12 minutes until they glow evenly red on all sides and have a layer of white ash. Turn them over every now and then. A lighter is not enough.

26mm or 27mm carbon – which size should I use?

26mm is the all-rounder and fits every HMD. Ideal for Virginia tobacco and most setups. 27mm burns hotter and longer – a good fit for large stainless steel HMDs. If you’re unsure, start with 26mm.

How many coals do I need per session?

For a smokebox you usually need 2 to 3 coals. For stainless steel HMDs, 2 carbons are often enough. With aluminum foil or a chimney attachment you will need 3 coals. A natural charcoal burns for around 60-90 minutes, so you usually don't need a refill per session.

Why does my coal run out when I smoke?

This is almost always because the coal was not completely burned through. Leave it on the lighter until it has a layer of white ash on all sides and is completely glowing red - including the core. Another reason: too little air supply in the smokebox. Open the vents slightly.

Which charcoal for darkblend tobacco?

There are two views on this: classic Tangiers-style dark leaf is considered heat-hungry, while many German dark blends (e.g. Darkside, Blackburn, Must H) are packed loose to semi-dense with rather reduced heat. So start with 26mm and add more if needed – an HMD makes the heat easier to control.

Is a 20kg large package of coal worth it?

Definitely, if you smoke shisha regularly. With a 20kg pack you save significantly compared to individual 1kg packs, and shipping is free. Depending on how much you smoke, the Zauberwürfel 20kg pack lasts several months. Coconut charcoal has no expiry date – stored dry, it keeps for a very long time.
