Unglazed = better heat Clay without glaze retains and releases heat more evenly. No spot burning, no “too hot, too fast”.

HMD & foil Everything compatible. Kaloud Lotus, Xkah, Oduman, Provost – works.
Great value for money Approx. 10 € for depots of 11 – 20g. Hard to beat as a second head or entry-level head.

The third category: XKAH Pro – electric HMD

Neither Phunnel nor Mehrloch – but in a league of its own. The XKAH Pro works without coal: an electric heating head with replaceable tobacco pods. No ash, no lighting, constant temperature throughout the entire session.

That's why we deliberately left the XKAH out of the quiz - the rules of the game are different than for classic heads.

Carbon free - no ring, no smell, no ash
Constant temperature throughout the entire session
Suitable for indoor and travel use (no firelighter required)
Pods and seals can be reordered as spare parts

Shisha head finder: How to find the perfect head for you

The shisha head is the heart of every session. It determines how long your tobacco will last, how intense the flavor will be and how thick your clouds will be. Nevertheless, most people just grab “any” bowl - often with the result that the new tobacco doesn't steep properly or tastes burnt after 20 minutes. Our Shisha head finder compares your smoking style with over 380 models from our range and provides you with three specific recommendations with live prices and direct shop links in 60 seconds.

Shisha head types in comparison

In the German and European scene you are essentially dealing with two head shapes: Phunnel and Multi-hole. Both can do dark blend just like blonde tobacco - the differences lie in the details.

🌋Phunnel

A central fireplace in the middle. The molasses stays in your head longer and the tobacco dries out more slowly. Classically strong with moist dark blends and longer sessions - but also works with blonde tobacco if you stuff it airy.

Juicy smokeLong sessionsLess draft

🌟Multi-hole

Classic design with multiple drainage holes in the base. Easier to build, forgives construction errors and provides more torque. In Russia and increasingly in Germany, Dark Blend is often smoked over multiple holes because this makes the smoke more intense and powerful.

Both types of tobaccoBeginner friendlyStrong smoke

💎Premium & handmade

Handcrafted heads from Germany like Vandenberg V1 or the American-inspired ones KONG-heads. High-density stoneware, individual glazes or specifically unglazed - each piece is unique. Will last for many years with care.

Which shisha head for which tobacco?

The old rule of thumb “Dark = Phunnel, Blond = Multi-hole” is only half true. In reality, the Russian and German scene often deliberately smokes Dark Blend over multiple holes because the smoke becomes stronger and more intense. Here is the honest overview:

  • Dark Blend (Darkside, Nameless, Holster, Musthave) → Phunnel for juicy, soft smoke and long sessions, Multi-hole for more intensity and stronger clouds. Both legitimate – depends on the smoking style.
  • Blonde tobacco (Al Waha, Adalya, Aqua Mentha, Savu) → primary Multi-hole. Blonde tobacco is drier, can be stuffed airily and also works very well over aluminum foil.
  • Virginia & steam stones (True Passion etc.) → Multi-hole. Needs air to develop its aroma.

Glazed or unglazed? The heat difference

An often underestimated factor — and one of the most common reasons why a session “doesn’t work”:

Unglazed heads

Porous clay without glaze absorbs heat slower, stores it longer and releases it more evenly. The heat is distributed throughout the material, not just on the surface. Classic unglazed representatives: Cosmo Bowl Turkish, KONG Phunnel (certain editions), many Russian manufacturing heads. Advantage: Forgiving, long consistent heat, ideal for long sessions.

Glazed heads

The glaze seals the surface - especially at reflective or highly reflective glazes (Metallic finishes, high gloss). This has two consequences: The head becomes hotter faster, because the heat is reflected by the glaze instead of absorbed. A tool for quick kick-in for professionals. For beginner but a common source of error - the tobacco burns faster if there is too much charcoal on it.

Practical recommendation

  • Beginners → unglazed or matt glazed (e.g. Cosmo Bowl, simple multi-hole bowls). Less heat errors.
  • Advanced → free selection, glazed usually looks more elegant in the setup.
  • Professionals → Use reflective/metallic glazes consciously for faster smoking.

Material: clay, porcelain, ceramic or glass?

Stoneware & clay

Classic. Retains heat long and evenly — perfect for dark blends and long sessions. Many premium phunnels are made of high-density stoneware (e.g. Vandenberg V1, KONG).

Porcelain

Noble, dense, often with elaborate glazes. Accepts heat medium quickly. Good all-round material for both types of tobacco.

Glass

Very heat resistant, heats up faster. Advantage: You see the molasses. Requires a little more practice to build.

Epoxy resin / resin

Modern material, extremely easy to clean. Ideal for travel setups. Not all epoxy heads are suitable for extreme heat - follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Tip: Don't buy the most expensive head, but the right one. A $10 Cosmo can be better for your dark blend than a $70 designer phunnel — if you don't know how to take advantage of the phunnel effect.

This is how you build every head correctly (short guide)

  1. Plucking tobacco and put in until airy. Don't stuff it!
  2. Distance to film/HMD Leave 2-3 mm.
  3. Aluminum foil 2-layer, smooth — or directly an HMD (Kaloud, Oduman, Xkah).
  4. coals initially 2-3 pieces all around, then reduce to 2.
  5. Start smoking only after preheating for 2 minutes.

HMD or aluminum foil – which is right?

Many modern heads (especially multi-hole heads like the Cosmo Bowl or Vandenberg V1 Phunnel) are HMD suitable. The choice:

  • Aluminum foil — cheap, always with you, takes practice
  • HMD (Heat Management Device) — more consistent heat, cleaner, reusable. It's worth it from the 3rd to 4th. Session.

Frequently asked questions about the shisha head

Which shisha head is best for beginners?
To get started, we recommend an unglazed multi-hole head like this Cosmo Bowl Turkish (approx. 10 €) or a simple stoneware phunnel. Unglazed bowls are much more forgiving of heat errors than mirror-glazed designer bowls - the tobacco burns less often.
Phunnel or multi-hole – which is better?
Neither is better - both can do both types of tobacco. Phunnel keeps moist tobacco juicy for longer (central molasses reservoir), multi-hole gives more draft and stronger smoke. Russian and German scenes now often deliberately smoke Dark Blend over multiple holes because of the intensity. It's best to use the quiz above - it takes your smoking style into account.
How much tobacco fits in a shisha bowl?
Depending on the depot. Small heads (Cosmo Bowl Standard) hold 10-15g, medium phunnels (Vandenberg V1, KONG M) 14-20g, large multi-hole heads up to 25g+. The exact quantity is in the respective product description - and our finder automatically matches you to the right size.
Which shisha head for Dark Blend?
Two legitimate ways: Phunnel for juicy, fine smoke and long sessions - the central chimney acts like a molasses reservoir. Or Multi-hole for stronger, more intense smoke, as preferred by the Russian and a large part of the German scene. Specific recommendations: Vandenberg V1 Phunnel, KONG Phunnel, Cosmo Bowl Turkish.
Glazed or unglazed – which is better for me to smoke?
Unglazed heads (porous clay) retain heat more evenly and are more forgiving of construction errors. Glazed heads - especially with reflective or metallic surfaces - get hotter more quickly because the glaze reflects heat. For beginners, this is often the reason why tobacco burns. If you are unsure: unglazed.
How do I clean a shisha bowl?
Rinse after each session with warm water and a soft brush - no detergent. Once a month soak in citric acid solution for 20 minutes (1 tbsp per 1 liter of water). Glazed and stoneware heads can handle this without any problems. Epoxy and painted heads rinse only, no acid.
How much does a good shisha bowl cost?
Cosmo Bowls are available from around €10 and are value for money winners. Premium heads made in Germany (Vandenberg V1, KONG) cost €29-45 and will last for many years with care. Handmade unique pieces can cost €60+. For most smokers, the sweet spot is between €15 and €30.
Can I use any bowl with any shisha?
Almost always yes – the standard connection is standardized. If the head wobbles, a head gasket (approx. €3) will help. Some premium shishas have a larger grind, and there are suitable adapters for this.
Do I need an HMD or is aluminum foil enough?
Aluminum foil always works. HMDs (Kaloud Lotus, Oduman, Xkah) give more consistent heat, you don't have to move the coals as often and it's cleaner. If you smoke more than twice a week, the investment will pay off within a few weeks.
Still unsure? Simply start the quiz above - it takes 60 seconds and takes into account the type of tobacco, session length, depot and budget for you personally.
