Strawberry on its own is surprisingly rare on the shelf – usually the red fruit shows up as part of a team. The range goes from solo flavors like Kismet Black Strawberry 60 on a honey base to creamy cocktail ideas like Blackburn Malibu with cream and candy or Blackburn Strobery Kokonat with coconut up to the tart, woodsy Darkside Wild Forest, which tastes more like wild strawberries in the undergrowth than jam. In between are crowd favorites like Must H Pinkman – strawberry with grapefruit, raspberry and candy sweetness – and special routes like Aino Strong Straw Barita, which counters the strawberry with tart rhubarb.
Our flavor profile for strawberry compared:
The widest strawberry range you can actually order comes from Blackburn: berry sampler can, coconut cream, colada, peach cream – hardly any sweet variation that isn't covered there. Sebero even has more strawberry blends in the catalog on paper, from Classic to Black – but on our shelf right now it's almost only Red Ball, the rest is out of stock. Darkside mixes strawberry into its Shake series and delivers with Wild Forest the woodsy take, Must H has, with Pinkman, one of the most sought-after strawberry blends around. Added to that are Holster with juicy fruit mixes, Aino with the mild Straw Daiqiwi and the bold Strong line as well as 187 with berry-heavy combos. Notable: with strawberry they have Darkblend-flavors slightly ahead compared to Virginia – unusual for such a sweet fruit aroma and ideal if you want fruit and kick at the same time.
Hardly any flavor brings as much sugar as strawberry – with candy and cream blends like Malibu or Strobery Kokonat, the molasses practically sticks to the spoon. That's exactly why the Phunnel head not a matter of taste here: it holds the molasses in the head instead of letting it drain, and in return delivers even heat and long, dense sessions. Sprinkle it in loosely, 15–22 g depending on head size, and leave 2–3 mm of air to the foil or to the smokebox (HMD) leave – pressed strawberry costs smoke and flavor. An HMD also keeps the heat constant and easy to control.
The charcoal question hangs on the sugar too: natural charcoal instead of quick-light, since its chemicals otherwise settle over the sweet fruit like a film. And because the dark-blend segment is unusually well represented for strawberry – Darkside Wild Forest, Aino Strong Straw Barita or Craftium Wildy Strawbs –, it's worth checking the label beforehand: pack darkblends fluffy to semi-firm, start with reduced heat, and if you want to smooth out the nicotine kick, pack them a touch denser. Too much charcoal or too dry a tobacco, and the strawberry tips from juicy into harsh – better to take a coal off early.
