Which shisha is right for you?

The fastest way to make the right choice – find yourself in one of the profiles:

🟢 You want to get started cheaply and easily: Entry-level complete set ~80–160 € (Amotion FUTR).
🔵 You smoke regularly at home: Stainless steel mid-range ~170-200 € (Union Sleek V2, Flash Bang, Moze Breeze Pro).
🟣 You want a design/premium piece: Premium ~250-400€ (BLADE, Union Fibonacci).
🟡 You are often on the move / travel a lot: Travel shisha (Amotion Roam) – or the same electric & coal-free (XKAH, see below).

Material: stainless steel, aluminum or traditional?

Comparison of stainless steel, aluminum and brass for shisha heads.
Material comparison: For most beginners, stainless steel is the best all-round choice.

Stainless steel (V2A) is the best all-round choice: rustproof, durable, tasteless (works with all types of tobacco) and easy to care for. Disadvantage: slightly heavier and more expensive. Aluminum is light and inexpensive - ideal as a budget or travel option, but softer and more susceptible to limescale. Traditional brass shishas (Tradi) are massive, stand well and have an oriental flair - but need more care: brass tarnishes and needs to be polished, the leather hose must not be cleaned wet.

⚠️ Stay away from cheap shishas made of thin sheet metal or plastic. Thin, chrome-plated sheet metal rusts quickly and becomes leaky at the transitions - and leaking means false air and noticeably worse smoke. Plastic parts often give off additional taste. The most common bad purchase.

Size: How big should the shisha be?

Shisha sizes compared with dimensions: Mini 30 cm, Medium 50 cm (recommendation for handling and stability), Large 75 cm - smoke and taste arise at the bowl, not at the column height
The size changes handling and stability - smoke and flavor arise at the bowl, not at the column height.

First of all, the most important thing, because there is a persistent misconception here: The size of the hookah does not determine how much smoke or flavor you get. The amount of smoke and taste arise at the top of the head - from the interaction of Tobacco, bowl and smokebox/HMD, i.e. heat management. A well-built small hookah smokes just as tightly as a large one, as long as it is tight and pulls freely.

What really changes the size is this Handling: Medium-sized shishas (approx. 40–60 cm) are the sweet spot for beginners - stable (2-3 kg plus wide base), easy to set up and take down and easy to transport. Mini/travel shishas (~30 cm) are ideal for on the go; Due to their compact design, the correct water level is more sensitive - if the water is too high, you will draw water into the hose more quickly or push it into the head when blowing it out. Large models (>70 cm) are statement pieces for the fixed home session.

📌 Note: The smoke and taste come from the head (tobacco + bowl + smokebox) - the shisha itself has to be above all be tight and pull freely. Choose the size based on handling and storage space, not based on “more smoke”.
💧 Water basics: Ideally, change the water after each head – fresh water means genuine taste. This applies to every shisha, whether large or small. The dip tube should be approx. 1-2 cm in the water.
🧳 Travel tip – Amotion Roam: As a compact travel pipe (from 79,90€) is the Amotion Roam great for on the go. To be honest, it has its own peculiarities: If the water level is not perfect, you quickly draw water into the hose, and when you blow it out, water can “flood” up into the head - then unfortunately the session is over. If you want to smoke on the go with maximum ease, it is ideal to combine it with the non-coal smoke XKAH (see below) - then you don't need any coal at all.

One hose or two? (+ column valve)

For beginners and solo smokers a hose connection the better choice: fewer sources of error, no false air and a clean, direct pull. Two or more connections are sociable, but more complicated: if several people are pulled at the same time, the smoke is distributed and the bowl burns down more quickly - and every unused connection must be sealed with a valve ball, otherwise the shisha will draw in false air. Our tip: Buy a single-hose shisha and use one when visiting Two-hose adapter retrofit.

Make sure that a Column or check valve (purge) is available - you can use it to blow stale smoke out of the bowl. For multi-hose shishas, the right ones must be used Valve balls included be.

Traditional or modern?

Modern shishas (stainless steel, silicone hose, plug-in system) are clearly recommended for beginners: The Silicone hose can be washed out as often as you like and hygienic, that Plug-in system can be put together without tools and easy to clean. Traditional shishas with leather hose offer a classic flair, but are more maintenance-intensive (leather hose must not be cleaned wet). For the first shisha: modern.

At the Bowl is that 45 mm connector system The most common solution today and the most uncomplicated solution for beginners - just plug it on, no thread that can jam. However, some manufacturers use their own plug-in, click or thread systems: So pay attention to the system when purchasing replacement glass. A Diffuser on the dip tube makes the train quieter - a nice extra, but not a must.

Workmanship & quality – this is how you recognize a good shisha

The most important purchasing criterion is most often overlooked: the processing. You recognize a good shisha:

  • Tightness: All transitions (bowl, adapter, hose connection) are tight and airtight.
  • Clean welds and no sharp edges.
  • Thick-walled glass at the bowl (doesn't break so easily).
  • Existing column valve and suitable seals.

Short: Workmanship beats appearance and price. Better a simple, tight stainless steel shisha than a beautiful but leaky cheap model.

How much does a good shisha cost?

You get a solid beginner shisha from around €80. The best value for money lies by 100-200€. Here is the overview:

budget What you get Recommendation
up to 100 € Solid entry-level shisha, often as a complete set - works perfectly Amotion Roam, Tradi models
100-200€ best value for money: high quality stainless steel, modern technology, durable Amotion FUTR/Flash Bang, Union Sleek V2, Moze Breeze Pro
€200-400 Premium material (V2A), design, best workmanship, CNC BLADE, Union Fibonacci, VZ Hookah
400 €+ High-end / statement pieces, collectibles MAXX Royal, Maklaud
💡 Do a quick calculation against: An evening in the shisha bar can easily cost €15-25. Having your own shisha for ~€120 paid for itself after just a few sessions.

Complete set or individual parts? And what else you need

This is for beginners Complete set the right choice: everything is coordinated and ready to go straight away. Usually included in the set: Smoke column + bowl, silicone hose, tobacco bowl, chimney attachment and often charcoal tongs.

Almost never in a set - you buy these separately:

  • Natural charcoal (Coconut charcoal) – not self-igniting, because of the taste.
  • Charcoal lighter for glowing through the coal.
  • Shisha tobacco (never included in the set).

You need that additionally

Coal, lighter and tongs – no session can be done without them. Prices live.

Typical bad purchases – and how to avoid them

  • Optics over quality: the beautiful, cheap tin shisha smokes badly. Processing comes before design.
  • “Bigger = better”: the huge shisha is unwieldy, not better.
  • Wrong material: Thin sheet metal rusts and leaks, plastic distorts the taste.
  • Too cheap: Cheap models start to rust or leak after weeks.
  • Forgot accessories: Bought a set, but coal, lighter and tobacco are missing - then you can't smoke.
  • Fake coal: Self-igniting instead of natural charcoal spoils the taste.

At what age can you buy a shisha?

The Hookah itself subject to in Germany no legal age limit. Fall under Section 10 of the Youth Protection Act Tobacco, all products containing nicotine as well as e-shishas/e-cigarettes including liquids (also nicotine-free) – consumption in public is also taboo for minors. Frequently asked questions about buying shisha

Which shisha is the best for beginners?

For most beginners, a medium-sized shisha (40-60 cm) made of stainless steel with a plug-in system, a hose connection and a silicone hose is the best choice - ideally as a complete set for €70-160. Models like the Amotion FUTR or Union Sleek V2 hit this sweet spot.

What do you have to pay attention to when buying shisha?

Five things: material (stainless steel is the best all-round choice), size (40-60 cm), a hose connection with a column valve, a modern plug-in system with a plug-in bowl - and above all, clean workmanship and tightness. Stay away from cheap shishas made of plastic or thin sheet metal.

How much does a good shisha cost?

You can get a solid beginner shisha from around €80, the best price-performance ratio is between €100 and €200 (high-quality stainless steel). Premium and design models start at around €250. You don't need more than €200 to get started.

Which hookah size is ideal for beginners?

A medium-sized shisha of around 40-60 cm - because of handling and stability, not because of the smoke: the amount of smoke and taste arise from the bowl (tobacco, bowl, smokebox/HMD), not from the height of the column. “Bigger is better” is a myth – medium size is stable, easy to set up and easy to transport.

Stainless steel or aluminum – which is better?

Stainless steel (V2A) is durable, rust-proof, tasteless and easy to clean - the best all-round choice for frequent smokers. Aluminum is lighter and cheaper (good for travel/entry level), but softer and more susceptible to limescale. You should stay away from plastic and thin sheet metal.

One hose or two hoses?

For beginners and solo smokers, a hose connection is the better choice: fewer sources of error and no false air due to unused connections - the hit remains clean and direct. For occasional visits, a two-hose adapter is sufficient for retrofitting - you don't have to buy a multi-hose shisha for this.

What do you need for a shisha?

The shisha (column + bowl) includes a head, hose and chimney attachment - these are usually included in the complete set. You almost always have to buy separately: natural charcoal, a charcoal lighter and the tobacco. We explain how to light the coal correctly in the coal guide.

Buy a complete set or individual parts?

The complete set is clear for beginners: everything is coordinated, ready to go straight away and cheaper than buying it individually. Individual parts are only worth it if you know exactly which column, bowl, head and hose you want to combine.

At what age can you buy a shisha?

The hookah itself has no legal age limit. From the age of 18, tobacco, all nicotine-containing products and e-shishas/e-cigarettes including liquids (also nicotine-free) are prohibited under the Youth Protection Act; Minors are also not allowed to smoke in public. At HookahX, sales generally only take place from the age of 18.

Which brand of shisha is the best?

To get started, Amotion, Union Hookah, MAXX, Aladin and Amy Deluxe are good, inexpensive brands. In the premium range, Moze, WD and Steamulation are considered references. There is no such thing as “the best brand” – what matters is material, workmanship and that the shisha fits your budget and usage.

Is an expensive shisha really better?

Not necessarily. From around €80 you can get a fully functional, good shisha. More expensive models offer higher quality materials, better workmanship, durability and design - but this is not a must for pure smoking pleasure as a beginner. Workmanship beats price.

Which shisha has the best price-performance ratio?

The best price-performance ratio is in the €100-200 range: high-quality stainless steel shishas with modern technology, e.g. B. Amotion Flash Bang, Union Sleek V2 or Moze Breeze Pro. Here you get longevity and consistent smoking behavior without a premium surcharge.
