Why blackberry-currant works so well

Blackberry brings dark, almost wine-like berry sweetness with a woodsy undertone – on its own, though, it can quickly come across as jammy. Currant is its perfect counterweight: its cassis character contributes a clear, tart acidity that tightens up the mix and keeps every draw lively. The result tastes like a handful of dark berries straight off the bush – sweet on the front end, tart on the finish. Handy for choosing the strength: with both flavors, Virginia and Darkblend roughly speaking. The ready-mixed combo flavors are almost consistently on a mild Virginia base; Odinson FREYA is the dark blend among them. The truly dark calibers are found among the solo flavors, from which you build the duo yourself.

Mixing it yourself: the right ratio

60/40 in favor of blackberry is the proven starting point: the blackberry carries sweetness and body, the currant provides the tart counterpoint. If you like it tangier, turn it up to 50/50 – above half cassis the head becomes noticeably sharp. For DIY blending, good pairings are Sebero Black Blckberi on the blackberry side and Must H Black Crrt as a cassis foundation – both are strong calibers, so pack fluffy to semi-firm and start with reduced heat. Mix evenly instead of layering, then loosely into the Phunnel set – a Smokebox keeps the heat constant, so the berries don't tip into harshness.

Frequently asked questions

Which ready-made blackberry-currant flavor is the best?
Our best seller is Odinson FREYA – there this exact duo is the focus, with no further fruits. If you like it more playful, reach for Al Massiva Blaulicht or Savu Raspbelly, which additionally bring blueberry and raspberry into the mix.
What mixing ratio for blackberry and blackcurrant?
Start with 60/40 in favor of blackberry: it delivers the dark sweetness, the currant the tart acidity. For more cassis bite you can go 50/50 – even more currant quickly makes the head sharp and sour.
Does the combo taste more sweet or sour?
Both, and that's exactly their appeal: the blackberry starts dark-sweet, the currant pulls the finish into a tart-sour close. Compared to strawberry or candy flavors, the mix is noticeably less sugary – more pure wild berries than fruit gum.
Is blackcurrant the same as cassis?
Cassis is blackcurrant – and that's almost always what's meant in shisha tobacco when it says currant. Flavors like Must H Black Crrt or Kismet Black Cassis 32 carry the character right in the name: dark, tart and noticeably sour.
Can I mix in a third berry as well?
Yes – blueberry makes the mix rounder and sweeter, raspberry fresher and fruitier. Many ready-made flavors like Al Massiva Blaulicht or Savu Raspbelly build exactly on that. When mixing your own: the third berry should replace part of the blackberry, not the currant, otherwise the mix loses its tart edge.
