What is a Phunnel Head?
A Phunnel (derived from the English „Funnel“ = funnel) is a Single hole head with a raised chimney in the center. The tobacco is placed in a ring around this chimney. Since the base is completely closed, the Do not drain the molasses – it stays in the tobacco and keeps the flavor full for the entire session.
Phunnel vs. multi-hole head – short version:
- Phunnel: Ideal for Virginia blend – juicy, long sessions (60-90 mins), no molasses loss
- Multi-hole head: Ideal for Darkblend & Turkish – intense flavor, powerful buzz, shorter sessions (45-60 mins)
- You'll find both head types in our main category Shisha heads.
Benefits of a Phunnel Head
- No molasses loss: The closed base keeps the tobacco juice where it belongs – in the head. No sticky smoke base, no clogged dip tube.
- Longer sessions: Because the molasses is retained, a Phunnel smokes noticeably longer than a multi-hole head. 60 to 90 minutes are standard.
- Even heat distribution: The chimney directs air through the tobacco without burning it. Together with one HMD this gives you easily controllable heat management.
- Less refilling required: By using tobacco efficiently, you need to add coal less often.

Setting up a Phunnel head correctly – setup tips
💡 Tip: How to get the maximum out of your Phunnel
- Tobacco: Virginia blend (e.g. Adalya, Hookain, True Passion, Holster) is ideal. Place the tobacco loosely and fluffy in the ring around the chimney – don't press it down!
- HMD or aluminum foil? A Heat Management Device (HMD) like the Bosskopp Smokebox or Lotus delivers more even heat and is easier to handle. Aluminum foil (folded double, holes poked with a needle) works just as well, though.
- Money: 2–3 natural charcoals (26mm) for standard Phunnel, 2 coals for mini Phunnel (e.g. Vandenberg V4). Place coals at the edge and work slowly toward the center.
- Overpack vs. Normal: For more smoke, fill the tobacco just above the rim (overpack). For longer, milder sessions stay 2–3mm below the rim.

Buying guide: How to find the right Phunnel
Tobacco: If you mostly smoke Virginia blend, a Phunnel is right for you – the closed bottom keeps the molasses in the head. For Darkblend and Turkish, you're better off with a multi-hole head; if you still want to smoke Darkblend in a Phunnel, choose a flat or low-load model with less tobacco and more heat.
Capacity: Go by the size of your group. Mini phunnels hold 8–12 g and are suitable for solo sessions, standard phunnels take 15–20 g, killer bowls up to 25 g for large groups. Always place the tobacco loosely, never pack it.
Fit and adapter: Most Phunnels have a standard connection that fits almost any shisha. If the head doesn't sit quite tight, a silicone seal from the category Adapters & gaskets that up; for older or special shishas an adapter may be necessary.
HMD compatibility: Standard Phunnels like the Vandenberg V1 or the Oblako M fit all common HMDs. An HMD isn't a must, though – double-layered aluminum foil with needle holes works too. For standard Phunnels, plan for 2–3 natural charcoals (26 mm); for mini Phunnels, 2 charcoals.

Frequently asked questions about Phunnel heads
What is the difference between phunnel and multi-hole head?
A Phunnel has a single chimney in the center with a closed bottom – the molasses stays in the head. A Multi-hole head has several holes in the base through which molasses can drip. Phunnels are suitable for Virginia blend, multi-hole for Dark Blend and Turkish tobacco.
Which tobacco is suitable for a Phunnel?
Virginia blend tobacco is ideal – meaning moist, molasses-rich flavors like Adalya, Hookain, True Passion, Holster or Aqua Mentha. The Phunnel keeps the molasses in the head and delivers a full 60–90 minutes of flavor.
Can I also use a Phunnel for Dark Blend?
Basically yes, but a Multi-hole head is better suited for Dark Blend. If you still want to try it, use a Flat or Low-Load Phunnel with little tobacco and more heat.
Do I need an HMD for a Phunnel?
No, one HMD (Heat Management Device) is optional. You can also smoke with aluminum foil. However, an HMD makes heat management much easier and is especially recommended for beginners.
How much tobacco fits in a phunnel?
That depends on the size: mini phunnels (e.g. Vandenberg V4) hold 8–12g, standard phunnels (Oblako M, Vandenberg V1) 15–20g, killer bowls (THICC Bowl) up to 25g. Always place the tobacco loosely, never pack it.
Which Phunnel is best for beginners?
For beginners, we recommend the Oblako Phunnel M or the Cosmo Bowl Phunnel. Both are affordable, sturdy and fit all common HMDs.
How do I clean my phunnel head?
Remove the tobacco after every session and rinse the head under warm water. For heavy buildup, soak it overnight in warm water with a bit of lemon juice. Avoid dish soap – simply wipe down glazed heads, rinse unglazed ones more thoroughly.
Does every phunnel fit every shisha?
Most Phunnels have a standard connection that fits almost every shisha. If it doesn't fit 100%, a silicone seal from the category will help Adapters & gaskets. With older or special shishas, an adapter may be necessary.
